Our Students

Little River School caters to students from Year 0 to Year 8, creating a unique environment where younger and older learners grow and lead together. Across all levels, we offer meaningful opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and actively contribute to the life of the school.

Whether through roles like student council, house captains, or leading class and school events, students are encouraged to step up, take responsibility, and make a difference. We believe in empowering our tamariki to share their ideas, collaborate with others, and help shape a school culture where everyone feels heard and valued.

By giving students a voice in decision-making and involving them in everyday school operations, we help build confident, capable young people who care about their community and take pride in their place within it.

School Leaders

Each year the Year 8 students have the opportunity to run to be elected school leaders. Two to four school leaders are elected by the tamariki. The candidates write and deliver an election speech stating their intentions as school leaders. There is then a secret vote to elect the leaders. This is a very important role in the school. The school leaders run house challenges, Milo Mondays, the school council and other events.

The Student Council

Each class elects two representatives to be on the school council with the school leaders and the principal. Class meetings are held, and the councillors then bring their ideas to the meeting for discussion. This year, the Student Council have sourced table tennis equipment, identified hazards in the school grounds, and are raising funds for a Gaga Ball pit.

School Houses

When a child starts school they are placed in a school house. These are:
    •    Tui / Kahurangi
    •    Kiwi / Kowhai
    •    Kereru / Kakariki
    •    Kea / Whero

Each term there are house challenges where children can compete to earn house points. Children can also dress in their house colours on these days. Two Year 8 students fill the role of house captains. A cup is awarded to the winning house at the end of each year.

Assembly

All classes meet each Friday afternoon at 1.30 to celebrate the events of the week, share achievements, and sing together. Parents are welcome to attend. School assemblies are led by two Year 8 students. Teachers present a Math Cup and class certificates. School Leaders present yellow Tu Toa Cards to children they have seen doing something extra special. Tu Toa tickets are drawn and these children get to select a prize after assembly. Whānau assemblies are run termly. Whānau are welcome at all assemblies.
