Our Classrooms

Little River School has three vibrant classrooms, each named after native trees that grow in our area — reflecting our deep connection to the local environment and the strength, growth, and uniqueness of our learners.

  • Kānuka – for Years 1–4
Kānuka is a hardy, fast-growing tree known for regenerating the land and providing shelter to young plants. Just like its namesake, our youngest learners begin their journey here, nurtured in a warm and supportive environment.
  • Tōtara – for Years 4–6
Tōtara is one of Aotearoa’s tallest and most valued native trees — traditionally used to carve waka and meeting houses. It represents strength, leadership, and the development of deeper knowledge as our students grow in confidence and independence.
  • Kahikatea – for Years 7–8
Kahikatea, the tallest native tree in New Zealand, thrives in groups with strong root systems that interconnect underground. This reflects the way our senior students work together, lead others, and prepare to move confidently on to the next stage of their learning journey.
