What are the Social Sciences about?

“Unuhia te rito o te harakeke, kei whea te kōmako e kō?
Whakatairangitia – rere ki uta, rere ki tai;
Ui mai koe ki ahau, he aha te mea nui o te ao?
Māku e kī atu: he tangata, he tangata, he tangata!”

If the heart of the harakeke was removed, where would the bellbird sing?
Proclaim it to the land, proclaim it to the sea;
If you ask me, what is the most important thing in the world?
I will reply: it is people, it is people, it is people!

At Little River School, the Social Sciences help tamariki understand how people live, work, and interact together — in the past, the present, and looking ahead to the future. It’s all about understanding how societies function, how decisions are made, and how individuals can contribute meaningfully as active, informed, and responsible citizens.

We explore real-world contexts — from local history and marae visits, to global challenges and current events — helping students develop a sense of place, identity, and responsibility. Learners are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and reflect on different perspectives.

Through Social Sciences, students at Little River School build the knowledge and values they need to understand their world and to make positive changes in their communities and beyond.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories at Little River School

From 2022, Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories has become a core part of learning in all schools and kura across the country. At Little River School, we embrace this as a powerful opportunity for our tamariki to explore the rich, complex, and diverse history of our nation — beginning with the stories of our local place.

This learning sits within the Social Sciences learning area, as it encourages students to become critical thinkers and active citizens — understanding how the past shapes our present and future.

The curriculum is built around three elements:

  • UNDERSTAND – big ideas that underpin the learning, such as the impact of colonisation, the significance of Māori-Crown relationships, and the importance of identity and belonging.
  • KNOW – key historical knowledge, especially about local people, places, and events that have shaped Aotearoa.
  • DO – using inquiry skills to investigate, interpret, and make sense of historical sources and perspectives.

Through Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories, our students explore meaningful local stories, connect with the whenua (land), and reflect on the many voices and experiences that form the fabric of our country. It is learning that grows empathy, understanding, and a strong sense of identity.
