What is Health and Physical Education about?

This learning area is grounded in four key, interconnected concepts:

Hauora

Based on Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori model of health developed by Mason Durie, hauora encompasses:

  • Taha wairua (spiritual well-being)
  • Taha hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being)
  • Taha tinana (physical well-being)
  • Taha whānau (social well-being)

These dimensions support one another and are essential for overall wellness.

Attitudes and Values

We encourage students to develop a positive, responsible attitude toward their own health and to show respect, care, and empathy for others and the environment. Social justice and fairness are also key aspects.

Socio-Ecological Perspective

Students learn to understand the relationships between themselves, other people, and society. This helps them make informed decisions that benefit both themselves and their communities.

Health Promotion

Students are empowered to take action to improve their own well-being and that of others by creating supportive and safe environments – both emotionally and physically.
