Learning Areas

There are 8 learning areas (or subject areas) in The New Zealand Curriculum:

  • English
  • The Arts
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Learning Languages
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Technology

The values and competencies in the New Zealand Curriculum are woven into these learning areas. They are designed to encourage enjoyment of learning and the ability to think critically, manage oneself, set goals, overcome obstacles and get along with others – the attributes students need to succeed as adults.

Our Curriculum at Little River School

At Little River School, we offer a rich and varied curriculum that supports every child to grow as a confident, capable learner. Rooted in the principles of the New Zealand Curriculum, our teaching and learning programmes are designed to engage students in meaningful, real-world learning while nurturing their unique strengths and interests.

We focus not only on foundational subjects like Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, but also on providing diverse opportunities in the Arts, Te Reo Māori, Technology, Health & Physical Education, and Environmental Education. Our rural setting, vibrant community, and hands-on approach allow us to bring learning to life in authentic and memorable ways.

A key part of our curriculum is the development of the Key Competencies — the essential capabilities students need to live, learn, work, and contribute to their communities.

These are:

  • Thinking – developing problem-solving, decision-making, and creativity
  • Using language, symbols, and texts – understanding and communicating information in many forms
  • Managing self – being self-motivated, resilient, and responsible
  • Relating to others – listening actively, working together, and respecting different viewpoints
  • Participating and contributing – being involved in communities and making positive contributions

We believe in learning that is student-centred, future-focused, and grounded in values. Tamariki are encouraged to set goals, reflect on their progress, and take ownership of their learning. Programmes like inquiry learning, student leadership, outdoor education, and the arts all help to build a well-rounded, deeply capable learner.

At Little River School, we prepare our students not just for the next step in their education — but for a lifetime of learning and contribution.
