Our History

Little River School in Canterbury, New Zealand has a history spanning several buildings and eras.

It began with a school established in 1873, which was replaced in 1880. This second school was tragically destroyed by fire in 1939. The current Little River School, a full primary school for Years 1-8, opened in 1942. 

Here's a more detailed look:

• 1873: The first school building was erected.
• 1880: A new school building replaced the original one.
• 1939: The second school building was destroyed by fire.
• 1942: The current Little River School building was opened.
• 1939: The Little River Library building, originally built to commemorate the coronation of King George V, was used as a temporary school after the fire.
• 1950s: The library building was also used by the Plunket nurse.
• Today: The school is a full primary school with a roll of 38 students. It draws students from a wide geographical area, including Birdling's Flat, Okuti Valley,
• Cooptown, Western Valley, Puaha Valley, and the Hilltop, with nearly half the students using the school bus.

In 2017, an extension to the main school block was completed. This purpose-built classroom — featuring breakout spaces, an art area, and a kitchen — is a stunning addition to the school and supports a wide range of learning experiences.
